Presentation Title: Current Progress on Electric Smelting Furnace Research at University of Newcastle

Prof Tom Honeyands has over 35 years experience in Industrial and Academic R&D. Since starting as Director of the BHP Centre for Sustainable Steelmaking Research 10 years ago,  he has grown the Centre into a World class iron and steel research centre. Centre research has assisted BHP and their customer steelworks to better utilise Australian iron ore in processes such as sintering, blast furnace ironmaking, and basic oxygen steelmaking. Recent work has focussed on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in these processes, including the impact of hydrogen injection in the blast furnace, and de-risking the direct reduced iron – electric smelting furnace process for iron production.
