Presentation Title: Defining Critical Tramp Element Thresholds for Sustainable Scrap-Based EAF Steel Production: Implications for Surface Hot Shortness and Circular Resource Use
Dr. Joonho Lee is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Korea University. Before joining Korea University, he was an Assistant Professor at Osaka University and a Research Associate at the University of Tokyo. Dr. Lee is a top leader of the steel society in Korea. He has been POSCO Professor from 2007 to 2023, working for new ironmaking and steelmaking technology developments and steel coating technology development. In 2025, he was appointed as POSCO Distinguished Professor for Advanced Frontier Technologies. He has served as Director of the Center for Research and Education of Metallurgy, a joint education system with Yonsei and Hanyang universities. He also serves as a Member of Steel Forum, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. Thanks to his outstanding commitment to this field, he was presented with a “Presidential Citation” from the President of South Korea at the occasion of Steel Korea 2019. He has published more than 180 international journal papers. His academic achievement was recognized by many awards, including the Dongkuk Songwon Academic Award from the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials in 2022. He also developed a new grade seismic safety reinforced bar and received the Minister Award for New Technology, MOTIE, in 2021. He is the Organizer of the Calphad 2025 Conference in Busan, where material scientists working on computational thermodynamics will participate.
