Presentation Title: How Steel contributes to addressing the Triple Planetary Crisis
Jean-Pierre Birat, who studied at Ecole des mines in Paris and at UC Berkeley in California, did research for 42 years at IRSID, now ArcelorMittal Research. He was in particular the director of ULCOS. He received several awards, including the Bessemer Gold Medal and membership to the Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.
He became afterwards the Secretary General of the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP).
Since 2013, he has been a senior consultant in the company he founded, IF STEELMAN.
Beyond consulting, he is also teaching in China (University of Science and Technology in Beijing and SPEIT-Jiaotong University in Shanghai) and he publishes regularly at the STEM-SSH interface (e.g. on the connection between ANT-Actor Network Theory and LCA-Life Cycle Assessment). He has organized Society and Materials Conferences (SAM) for more than 20 years.
He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Matériaux et Techniques.
His most important recent contributions are probably related to the decarbonization of society and particularly of the steel industry.
